Famous magician K Lal passes away

AHMEDABAD: Renowned magician Kantilal Girdharilal Vora, famously known as K Lal, passed away at his residence in Ahmedabad early on Sunday due to old-age related problems. He was 88.

Lal is survived by his wife Pushpa, a son and two daughters.

Lal was born in January 1924 in Bagasara in Amreli district in Gujarat and his last show was in Ahmedabad in June this year, his son Harshad Vora said.

The last rites would be performed at SG Road crematorium tomorrow, he added.

Lal was suffering from a serious ailment, another family member said.

Meanwhile, political leaders cutting across party lines and Gujarati film stars visited the artist's residence located on Ashram Road here.

Condoling his death, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "World renowned magician and proud son of Gujarat, K Lal left us today. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to his family."

Leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil said, "Through his art, he made Gujarat and India proud in the world. Using magical illusions of Mahatma Gandhi, he spread the message of truth and non-violence."

Recalling an incident signifying his father's patriotism, Vora said, "He was doing a show in Bahrain, where a magic act using jug and water, was being performed. Soon, children started imitating him and began chanting 'water of India ... water of India'.

"However, when local officials noticed this, they asked Lal to instead chant 'water of Bahrain ... water of Bahrain' and offered him Rs 25 lakh so that children chant the same message. But, he declined to do so and rejected the offer."

Indian film legend Raj Kapoor had once said about K Lal: "If you examine his blood, you will find nothing but magic in it."
